About GoutSafe
GoutSafe answers one question well: can I eat this with gout? We turn the published science into a clear, sourced grade for 539 foods, show our confidence on every one, and keep the model current as the research moves. It is built for the people who face that question every day: gout patients and the caregivers who shop and cook for them.
The science keeps moving. So do we.
What actually drives a gout flare has come into focus in stages. For years the whole story was purines. Then the evidence showed that fructose raises uric acid on its own, independent of any purine. Most recently, large studies have linked how heavily a food is processed to gout risk beyond either number, which is why a low-purine snack no longer gets an automatic pass here.
GoutSafe is built to keep pace. When the evidence advances, the grades advance with it, and every change is versioned and dated so you can see what moved and why. The promise is simple: you should always get the most current, best-sourced answer, not last decade's rule of thumb.
Where the numbers come from
Every grade traces back to published data: the USDA Purine Database, USDA FoodData Central, and peer-reviewed literature. Purine is the hard input, so we never invent it; each value carries its real source and a confidence level you can see. We do not overwrite a source silently; corrections are versioned and dated. The data was last reviewed July 18, 2026. You can read exactly how we turn that data into an A to E grade in our methodology, and if a number looks wrong, tell us and we will check it.
Who builds this
Hi, I'm Oliver. I'm a data-science master's student, and I've had gout since my mid-20s. When I was diagnosed, accurate, data-centric gout information was hard to find: sources contradicted each other on things like spinach and fish, and hard numbers on purine were tough to track down. So I started the GoutSafe database as a project in my master's program. I hope it helps my fellow gouties stay flare-free!
