What studies found on folic acid

Limited The largest trial (Qin 2017, 15,364 adults with high blood pressure) found serum uric acid rose 4.0 µmol/L (about 0.07 mg/dL) less over 4.4 years with folic acid, a very small difference, an 8-week trial (n=450) found no overall change, and no trial enrolled people with gout.

Studied dose: 0.4 to 0.8 mg (400 to 800 mcg) folic acid a day, given with enalapril.

  • Qin X 2017, Am J Clin Nutr. Randomized double-blind trial (CSPPT substudy), 15364 people, Median 4.4 years. Serum uric acid rose in both groups, by 4.0 µmol/L less with folic acid, and new high uric acid was slightly less common (15.0% vs 16.3%).
  • Li H 2015, Intern Med. Randomized double-blind controlled trial, 450 people, 8 weeks. Overall, uric acid did not differ between groups, and a difference appeared only in a subgroup with higher baseline uric acid on 0.8 mg.
  • Ye G 2025, Nutr Metab (Lond). Network meta-analysis of randomized trials, 44972 people, Varied by trial. Folic acid ranked with a pooled uric acid difference of -57.6 µmol/L vs conventional therapy, with a wide confidence interval (-107.1 to -8.1).
