What studies found on chanca piedra (phyllanthus niruri)

Insufficient Human studies of chanca piedra measured kidney stones, and the one that reported serum uric acid (Pucci 2018, n=56, no control group) found no change.

Studied dose: Infusion for 12 weeks in Pucci 2018, amount not stated in the abstract. No study enrolled people with gout.

  • Pucci ND 2018, Int Braz J Urol. Prospective single-arm study, 56 people, 12 weeks plus 12-week washout. In people with kidney stones, serum uric acid did not change significantly, while urinary uric acid fell in the subgroup with high urinary uric acid.

Safety: Pucci 2018 (n=56) reported no significant change in blood counts, creatinine or electrolytes. This review found no study of chanca piedra taken with allopurinol, febuxostat or colchicine. Talk to your doctor before starting a supplement, especially if you take allopurinol, febuxostat or colchicine.
